Cyrus Tang was born in Wujiang District, Suzhou, in 1930. His family nurtured him a character that he is always ready to help others. Tang studied in the United States in 1950. After that, he started from scratch and built a successful career.
Tang always thinks of his motherland. Through the Cyrus Chung Ying Tang Foundation (China), he has donated a total of 770 million yuan (US$124 million) to support China’s education, healthcare and other social welfare causes by the end of 2014. Among these donations, about 250 million yuan (US$40 million) was in Jiangsu Province.
Cyrus Tang has set up scholarships in Jiangsu-based Nanjing University, Southeast University, Suzhou University and other universities to encourage outstanding students. Nearly 40 million yuan have been awarded.
Cyrus Chung Ying Tang Foundation (China) has implemented a number of aid projects integrating medical, education and scientific research. The foundation donated 60 million yuan (around US$9.6 million) to build Shengze Hospital in Suzhou, 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) to help build Hematology Research Center of Suzhou University, and 20 million yuan (US$3.2 million) to build the Jiangsu Chinese Medicine Prescription Key Laboratory in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.
The foundation is always active in supporting the implementation of education and research projects in relevant universities. Over the years, 50 million yuan (US$8 million) has been donated to facilitate projects including National Laboratory of Microstructures in Nanjing University.
