Nanjing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau intercepted four live ground beetles found in mail from the UK on Sept 19.
These live insects were bought online by a middle school student in Yancheng who is a super enthusiast of insects. He decided to buy insects online and raise and observe them. He was not aware that live insects are on the list of items prohibited for import into China.
Without the entry and exit quarantine approval and supervision, alien species have the risk of spreading, and may also bring epidemic diseases. If these insects escape and breed, they will destroy the original ecological balance.
In accordance with the law, Nanjing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau identified and destroyed the beetles.
