The spending on basic education by Chinese families in the fall semester of 2016 and spring semester of 2017 surged to 1.9 trillion yuan, accounting for 2.48% of the country’s GDP in the corresponding period, according to a survey done by Peking University.
Data from the China Educational Finance Research Institute of Peking University show the level and scale of family education expenditure in China have remained at a relatively high level with obvious urban and rural disparities.
Family education spending at the basic education stage averaged 8143 yuan during the past academic year with the urban families spending 100,10 yuan, 2.5-fold that of the rural families’ expenditure of 3936 yuan on the average.
Based on the ratio of each student's annual education expenditure to the total household consumption expenditure, the average household education burden rate is 11.9% in the compulsory education period.
Judging from the school's on-campus and off-campus education expenditure, the preschool stage expenditure accounted for 88.8% of the total education expenditure with off-campus expenditure accounting for 11.2%.
In the primary school period, the on-campus and off-campus expenditure accounted for 61.7% and 38.3% of the total.
the on-campus and off-campus expenditure in the junior high school period is represented by a ratio of 67.5% and 32.2% while in the senior high school period the figures averaged 73.3% and 26.7%.
