Some 100 visual-impaired people gathered in a party in Jinling Library on Dec. 31, 2017, where an auditory feast was staged to celebrate the New Year.

The voluntary performers at the party were 17 international students from over ten countries like Russia, Thailand, Mongolia and Uzbekistan, etc., who sang songs and read poems for the visually impaired audience.

“The disabled is part of the society, whom we should never forget.” said Shokhrukh Ziyomukhamedov from Uzbekistan, “We should help them and make them feel happy.”

Although the volunteers were from different countries, they performed the 90-minute show all in Chinese. Their fluent Chinese and clear pronunciation won much applause from the audience.

The party is a New Year special of the “Readers” activity, which was initiated by Jinling Library in 2012. The activity aims to provide as much reading material as possible to visually disabled people by transferring paper documents into audio version.

Since 2012, nearly 9,000 volunteers have provided more than 200 hours’ audio material adapted from 87 books and over 90 articles, serving over 30,000 visually impaired people in Jiangsu.

In 2016, the library established the very first theatre for the visually disabled in China.
