Yesterday, the song of The Cranberries flooded the screen of almost every one because Dolores, the lead singer of The Cranberries, who was departed on January 15th. She was just 46.
The three members of the band tweeted: “We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today.”
Irish President Michael D. Higgins described Dolores’ death as a big loss to Irish music, saying her influence was “immense”.
The Cranberries was founded in Ireland, 1990. It is recognized as one of the leading forces of Irish music in the world with U2, Sinead O’Connor and Enya.
Although Dolores is not the founding member, the breakthrough of The Cranberries is basically made after she joined the band.
The band shot to fame with their 1993 debut album “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” after the hit song Linger was picked up by MTV. The band’s first three albums sold a combined 28 million copies.
It has millions of fans worldwide, including a large portion in China.
The sudden death of Dolores shocked millions of fans in China. Many influential figures posted the news and shared their feelings on Weibo.
Some say that her overwhelming voice instantly appears after the devastating news.

The singer influenced many Chinese singers, including Faye Wong. She was inspired by O’Riordan’s style of singing and has adopted it into her own songs. She also covered The Cranberries’ song Dreams, and used the Chinese version of the song in the movie Chungking Express directed by Wong Kar-Wai.
Other Chinese singers that influenced by her include Mavis Fan, Hebe, and Wu Qingsong of the band Sodagreen.
13 years ago, Chinese singer Li Yuchun (Chris Lee) performed The Cranberries’ Zombie when she participated a talent show called Super Girls. Zombie is a protest song written during the band’s English tour in 1993, in memory of two boys, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in the IRA bombing in Warrington earlier that year.
The band planned to sing in Beijing last July but was canceled at last for Dolores’ poor health condition.
Chinese singer and songwriter Gao Xiaosong told the audience in his program Morning Call that The Cranberries was hoping to perform in China last November. However, the trip hasn’t been made.
Dolores died in the sun like her song Dying in the Sun while our city is in a rainy gloom.
