In 2017, China's GDP increased by 6.9%, exceeding the expected target of 6.5%. At the same time, its energy consumption per unit GDP decreased by 3.7% to accomplish its objectives and tasks, significantly improving energy efficiency. The increase in consumer prices was controlled at 1.6%, maintaining a modest rise.
The quality of the environment has been significantly improved. The nation's electricity generation of coal and the replacement of coal by gas in excess of its assigned tasks have also brought about a significant reduction in emissions of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, well above the target of 3%. The rural revitalization strategy has brought new hope for rural development. In 2017, more than 10 million rural residents shook off poverty, higher than the targeted number of 12.89 million.
