A design of the character for the Chinese family name "钱" (meaning money in English) by a Taicang designer was recently nominated for the Chinese Family Name Design Contest, Taicang Daily reported on March 2.
Started on Sept 23, 2017, the contest has attracted more than 33,000 participants at home and abroad, as part of preparations for a ceremony of Yellow Emperor (a China's legendary ruler) worship to be held in April 2018.
"There is an old Chinese saying that it's easy to do trade with enough money and to dance with long sleeves," Qian Yanqing, designer of the family name said. "So I integrated a graceful dancing posture into the Chinese character "钱" to rouse the viewer's reflection on related problems."
Qian is already well-known among China's designers and his studio for graphic design has grown into one of the best of its kind in Taicang after ten years' development.
Qian said that they have designed for many local agencies, such as governmental departments, the Association of European Enterprises, and Schaeffler Group, a German enterprise.
The most impressive design activity for Qian was one in which he worked with several other Chinese practitioners to invite 150 designers from six countries and regions to design for Taicang, which not only publicized the city, but also launched a new trend of China's promising young designers serving urban construction.
