China plans to roll out E-tickets for high-speed trains across the country in 2019, the China Railway Corporation said Monday. Passengers will be able to tap their smartphones or ID cards against a card reader at the ticket barrier to enter the station.

China Railway launched its first electronic railway tickets last Thursday on south China's island province of Hainan, the state-owned high-speed railroad operator announced

The new tickets, which are in their trial period, feature QR codes that railway employees scan to admit passengers on board. They are especially advantageous to anyone who does not possess a form of ID accepted at railway ticketing machines.

In addition to the second-generation ID card, passengers can also check in at the railway stations with foreigners' residence permit, Hong Kong and Macao residents' travel permits to the mainland, and Taiwan residents' travel permits to and from the mainland.

Passengers who purchase e-tickets on the 12306 website can also use the dynamic QR code generated by the 12306 mobile APP to pass the automatic ticket checking machine at the station by scanning the code for entry and exit procedures.

Electronic payment and tickets have profoundly changed people’s lives since they have become increasingly popular for commuters to take the bus and metro in China. In this way, the advanced technology will help passengers save the time involved in using paper tickets, making travel more convenient and comfortable.

Besides that, E-tickets are more eco-friendly, as there is no need for special paper and ink to print paper tickets, and personal information leaked from abandoned tickets will not happen thanks to the technology, China Railway Corporation
