Women between the ages of 16 and 26 in Nanjing will be able to receive the HPV 9-valent vaccine as the vaccine has been made available in Luhe district, Nanjing city, according to the district’s disease prevention and control center.
People will have to pay 3954 yuan for three shots of the nine-variant HPV vaccine, the center said on Thursday.
Only 200 vaccines in the first batch are available so far. That means it can only meet the needs of a maximum of 600 people.
Chinese authorities approved the import of the vaccine to the mainland last April.
The HPV 9-valent vaccine is specifically designed for women between the ages of 16 and 26.
The HPV vaccine helps protect against cancers and genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus.
Every year tens of thousands of Chinese women go overseas, as far as the Unite States, to receive the vaccines due to the inadequate supply in the domestic market, according to media reports.
Tests have proven that the 9-valent HPV vaccine is effective in preventing up to nine types of HPV. Further, it has been in high demand in China since the first batch arrived in Hainan Province in late May last year.
Human papillomavirus infection is very common. Most people—about 9 in 10—will get an HPV infection at some point in their lives. HPV infections can cause health problems, including several kinds of cancer in both women and men. There are safe and effective vaccines recommended to prevent these health problems from happening.
HPV has been linked to a global rise in cervical cancer rates among women.
Medical professionals recommend young women receive the vaccine before they become sexually active, as HPV is spread through sexual activity.
