East China’s Jiangsu province is making unremitting efforts to make its school canteens as transparent as possible in a bid to ensure the health of the school children.
In the new semester, the province’s first batch of "Sunshine Canteen" digitalized supervision platform construction pilots were launched in Nanjing, Suzhou, Yancheng and Taizhou, making the table of primary and middle school students more transparent.
Since the beginning of the new semester, the canteens of 31 primary and secondary schools in Xuanwu District of Nanjing have launched the "Student Dietary Nutrition Management Platform" to compile more than 500 primary and secondary school menus by relying on big data, and build a database of basic ingredients and nutrients. According to the database, the canteens develop menus that meet the nutritional standards. The system will intelligently score the school's menu while the parents can see the nutrient content of the recipe and make comparison with the standard content.
Through this platform, parents and education departments can participate in the supervision of the canteens’ food management, food procurement and distribution, food safety, and nutrition. The education department can also monitor the real-time health of the school kitchens through the platform’s intelligent monitoring system.
The Sunshine Canteen Project has been placed top on the agenda of the province's education work in 2019. 276 schools in Jiangyan District of Taizhou, Jianye District of Nanjing and Zhangjiagang City of Suzhou have also joined the province's unified "digitalized supervision platform". In 2019, Jiangsu will also set up a project to mull the legislation on the draft version of the Regulations on the Management of Canteens in Primary and Secondary Schools in Jiangsu Province to ensure that healthy and nutritional food are supplied to the students.
