China saw a passenger flow return peak on Wednesday as the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush is drawing to an end. 110.4 million passengers were sent off on Wednesday with 930 passenger trains added to the fleet, the China Railway Corporation said.
8.723 million railway trips were made on Tuesday, according to the railway authority.
The railway peak flow is expected to last a few more days as the return peak continues.
Hundreds of passenger trains were added to the fleet to cope with the surge in the number of passengers.
Major airports across the country saw rising flow of passengers on Wednesday. The Capital Airport in Beijing sent off 157400 passengers on Wednesday alone. The airports in Haikou and Sanya saw rising flow of passengers while tickets have fallen short of supply on flights from Chongqing, Kunming and Beijing to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai.
The Spring Festival Travel Rush, also known as Chunyun and Chunyun Migration in Chinese, or Chinese New Year Travel Rush, Lunar New Year Travel Rush is the largest human migration on earth happening annually. It usually begins 15 days ahead of the Chinese New Year and 25 days after, lasting for 40 days. The Chunyun 2019 lasts from January 21 to March 1. During the Spring Festival Rush, China, especially its railway system, faces an extremely high traffic load, which results in great difficulties to obtain a ticket, crowded railway stations and train carriages.
