A dance drama performed by artists from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, was hailed in Cambodia and Thailand this week.
The dance drama Nanguo Hongdou(Red Bean in the Southern Land) is part of the “Experience China – Jiangsu Culture Week” that ended Sunday in Thailand. The drama was performed in Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Siem Reap and Thailand’s Bangkok during the Culture Week.
The drama was based on a true transnational love story that happened in Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ), an economic and trade cooperation zone constructed by Chinese and Cambodian enterprises.
Liu Zhongbao, art director of Wuxi Song and Dance Theater, said: “The dance was so successful that the Governor of Siem Reap and the wife of the Cultural Counselor were moved to tears after the performance.”
A government employee from Siem Reap said: “It is hoped that Wuxi will continue to create stories that reflect close ties between China and Cambodia through various artistic forms and visit Siem Reap next year.”
The drama was performed Wednesday in Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, where the story of Nanguo Hongdouhappened, as the Culture Week was unveiled to SSEZ.
As the drama unfolds, a Cambodian girl fell in love with a Chinese engineer that works in the economic zone and tied the knot eventually.
“It's very different from what's been done in the past because this is where the story was happened,” Qin Shuang, the actor who plays the role of the Cambodian girl’s father, said that he felt more immersive in the drama since the drama was performed for the first time at its birth place.
A SSEZ employee from Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, said: “I’m so thrilled to be ‘back home’ by watching the show and seeing so many cultural elements of Jiangsu.”
A Cambodian girl, who has been working in the SSEZ for half a year, said that she was so moved by the love story behind the dance drama that she hoped to watch it again in the future.
The award-giving ceremony of the second International Youth Painting Competition was also held in the SSEZ on Wednesday.
