A group of 39 students from Namibia, sponsored by a scholarship named after the African country’s president, received diplomas from Nantong Vocational University on June 14.
At the graduation ceremony, Elia G. Kaiyamo, Namibian Ambassador to China, said he hopes these outstanding young people can apply what they have learned in China to contribute to the development of their hometowns in Namibia.

Fernando, 25, graduated with the construction engineering major and introduced his study and life in China in fluent Chinese at the graduation ceremony. He said he did not know any Chinese characters when he first came to Nantong and he was not feeling confident at that time. With the help of Chinese teachers and classmates, he became an outstanding student. After the summer vacation, he will go to Nantong University to pursue further studies.

Qin Zhilin, secretary of the CPC Nantong Vocational University Committee, said that the university accepted the first batch of international students selected from 3,000 applicants from 14 regions in Namibia in November 2016. According to requirements of enterprises and African countries, the university offered many majors including construction engineering, environmental engineering, logistics management, and machinery manufacturing. After three years of study, Namibian students have achieved good results, with 39 students passing the HSK3 test and 15 students passing the HSK4 test. Five students completed the Jiangsu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, and one student won the second prize at the First Jiangsu Intercultural Communicative Competence Test.
