Academician Shen Shuzhong of Nanjing University won the International Gold Medal of Stratigraphy at the 3rd International Stratigraphy Conference held on July 4th in Milan, Italy. Shen, who made important contributions to the study of paleontology stratigraphy, became the first Asian scientist to be honored with this award.
The International Gold Medal of Stratigraphy was established in 2004 by the International Stratigraphic Commission and is awarded every four years.
The award, awarded to one person each time, is given to scientists who have achieved outstanding achievements in the field of international community of stratigraphy. There were only four scientists who had won this honor in the world before, and Academician Shen Shuzhong was the fifth.
Shen Shuzhong is a world-renowned stratigrapher, paleontologist, brachiopod and dental animal research expert. He is one of the main contributors to the two Global Stratotype Section and Points of Permian-Triassic Boundary in China. He has made outstanding contributions to the development of biostratigraphy, the establishment of stratigraphic sequences and global comparisons, and the study of the extinction of the end of the Permian.
China possesses nearly complete strata from Ediacaran to Quaternary, covering wide paleogeographic regions and containing abundant well-preserved fossils.
