Chinese traditional pottery has a long history of thousands of years. With development of the times, art gradually integrates into people’s daily lives and ceramics have a whole new way of expression. Modern ceramics can produce more novel and unique works of art. Taihu Lake Stone is one of the innovative representations.
In the morning of Wednesday, Taibo Academy initiated its 13th course smoothly. Professor Jiang Xiujuan led the students to make Taihu Lake Stone with pottery clay and to experience the beauty of Taihu Lake Stone in Suzhou gardens through appreciating ceramic art.
Before the course began, Mrs. Jiang gave students a vivid and interesting pottery knowledge class to help students understand the history of ceramic art and introduced the unique beauty of Taihu Lake Stone.
Later, all the students were given clay and made their own Taihu Lake Stones of different shapes with their creativities.
Taihu Lake Stones are strange but distinctive through the natural erosion along with time. They are famous for being rich in Taihu Lake area.
There are various kinds of Taihu Lake Stones in Suzhou gardens. The most famous one is the extraordinary ‘GuanYunFeng’ in Lingering Garden.
The Taihu Lake Stone made of pottery clay not only reproduces the beauty of the original stone, but also can be used as a decoration in people’s daily lives because it’s small and slim. When pottery encounters Taihu Lake Stones, we could appreciate botanical garden scenery on our desks from now on.
Pinch, knead, clap, squeeze… The pottery clay in the hands of the children went through a series of pottery making procedures. Not that skillful, the children have experienced every step of making and kept the precious memory.
The children enjoyed the class and the whole process. It could be believed that they have deepened their understanding of Chinese traditional culture with first-hand experience.
