The 3rd Jiangsu Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition was held in Xiangcheng District of Suzhou City from July 30 to 31, showcasing 55 projects in many sectors all across the province.

The contestants included local craftsmen, cultural specialists, ex-servicemen, scientific and technological personnel, college graduates, as well as managerial professionals who either start a business or make innovations in rural areas.

Amid people’s growing awareness of ecological and environmental protection, many projects in the competition tried to turn waste into treasure, some through a combination with intangible cultural heritages. Other projects explored technologies for breeding farms and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Biluochun tea from Dongting Mountain area and silk are both China's national intangible cultural heritages. However, the market value of this type of tea often falls by mid-April because the production needs to follow strict requirements. Sun Zheng, who is from Wuzhong District of Suzhou, has creatively combined tea and silk in his project. He turned the Biluochun tea leaf that was picked in late April into liquid to dye the silk. This creation gives a new display of the charms of tea and silk.

Zhu Xinhua, deputy director of the Agriculture and Rural Department of Jiangsu Province, said that the competition has fully displayed the passion and creativity of people in rural areas. He hoped that all cities, counties, and districts will continue to create a favorable environment for rural entrepreneurship and innovation.
