A solo exhibition of veteran artist Zhou Zheng is underway at Suzhou Art Museum through December 20.
Born in Suzhou in 1930 and educated at Suzhou Institute of Art, graduating in 1950, Zhou was tutored by Yan Wenliang (1893-1988) and Zhu Shijie (1900-1990), two heavyweights of China’s modern art.
He graduated from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 1955 where he taught for several decades. Zhou established a distinctive style of his own that not only contains some intricate details but is filled with wild and primitive brushstrokes.
“An artist should always have an open attitude not only to others but to himself as well. We should ‘protect’ the variety in art similar to how we protect our environment,” the artist concluded.
