Suzhou New District (SND) should set an example for broader trade relations between China and Japan, said Yokoi Yutaka, Japanese ambassador to China.

Yutaka made the remarks during a meeting with Wu Xinming, head of Suzhou New District in East China's Jiangsu province, on Dec 16 in Beijing.

He said that the relationship between China and Japan is improving and SND has seen strong economic relations with Japan over the past three decades.

Wu detailed the Japanese ambassador on SND's cooperation with Japan, saying that it has developed into a hub for Japanese-funded companies in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Wu said that starting in March this year, a delegation had been visiting Japan every month to attract investment, improve the district's reputation, and solicit more projects.

A total of 22 companies have already decided to set up operations in SND and have offered a total of $1.6 billion in investment during the monthly visits.

Wu added that in order to offer a better living environment for local Japanese people, the district has also established schools, clinics, shopping malls, and Japanese food streets for Japanese people.

Yutaka praised the attractive business and living environment in SND and expressed hope that the district would continue promoting the development of local Japanese companies over the next three decades and cooperate with Japan to develop new medical treatments and improve elderly care.

Wu also presented Yutaka with an embroidery work called Tranquil Suzhou by Su embroidery master Lu Fuying.

SND is currently home to more than 570 Japanese companies with a total of $20 billion in investment, accounting for half of all Japanese companies in Suzhou.
