JSBC documentary hails heroes for containing COVID-19 in Hubei

Hailed as heroes in harm's way, over 40,000 healthcare workers in 100 plus medical teams converged in Hubei, the hardest hit province, from across the nation to support epidemic control. The success of Wuhan's anti-epidemic battle is inseparable from the strenuous efforts made by the medical teams from around the country. More than 2800 doctors and nurses from east China's Jiangsu Province played a vital role in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in Hubei. Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation dispatched staff reporters to Hubei during the anti-epidemic days to record the unforgettable moments in a TV documentary that was released Tuesday in Nanjing. 

The TV documentary was aired Tuesday afternoon at Nanjing Medical University.

Lu Xiang, Deputy General Commander of the Jiangsu Headquarters for Pairing-up Assistance in Hubei for Epidemic Control, shared his story with the audience.

Zhao Wei, Head of the Jiangsu medical team in Huangshi City, Hubei Province, was heavily involved in the treatment and rescue of the COVID-19 patients.

Zhao Wei talked about his experience in Huangshi that impressed him deeply was February 15 when they admitted four critically infected patients who were reduced to life-threatening conditions in one hour before midnight, and were transferred to the hospital all at once. He and his colleagues rushed to give personalized treatment to the patients in the hope of bring them back to life.

Zhao Wei and the five doctors in the same ward stayed in the ward almost sleeplessly for the first two days after entering the ward.

They work in groups of two, six hours for one shift, and they were extremely exhausted and almost collapsed when they passed work on to the next shift.

The strong desire and conviction to overcome the disease supported them to stand up tenaciously. Yu Yan is also one of the nurses who volunteered to join the anti-epidemic fight. As soon as she arrived in Huangshi, she was assigned to the Intensive Care Unit of Huangshi Central Hospital.

She recalled that the patients were totally dependent on them, such as foot massage, cutting nails, shaving beards, combing hair and taking medicine. One patient told her that she was better than his granddaughter, while some other patients said that she was better than their daughter-in-law. she said "We are doing your job, but for he feels that you are protecting us as if you gave your life"

Starting in February, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation dispatched two teams of staff reporters to Wuhan and Huangshi to shoot impressive moments by traveling from one hospital to another, visiting virus-infected areas and interviewing more than 160 people.

By shooting 15 thousand minutes of raw video, the staff reporters have edited and produced an 8-episode TV documentary titled Heroes in Harm's Way: The Fight against the Pandemic in Hubei by Jiangsu Medical Team.

The documentary has been hailed since its release online with 41 million plays on the Internet so far.

Du Jun, Choreographer, JSBC staff reporter in Huangshi,  shared stories behind this documentary. The red zone is the so-called center of storm. So as  documentary crew members, they were eager to go inside the red zone to see what was happening inside and how the doctors and nurses were committed to their work. The first time they went inside left her deep impression. They saw three nurses bending over a patient and intubating the patient, and at that moment she stood beside the patient's bed about a meter away. It was not true if she was not afraid, but she saw in the camera lens that the medical staff were so calm and focused on doing everything. She felt encouraged, and the fear was fleeting and she immediately engaged in my work.

Lu Xiang worked for 47 days in Hubei until he and the medical teams were withdrawn on March 27 when Huangshi was cleared of infected cases.

He expressed the importance of medical team's assistance to Hubei, and the Jiangsu medical team also plays a key role, especially the effective prevention and treatment of the patients in Wuhan. The treatment plan is constantly updated and matured so that it became a standardized process that everyone was following, so this epidemic was finally brought under control.
