Nantong gets boost from President Xi’s inspection tour

The city of Nantong has got a major boost from President Xi Jinping’s recent inspection tour on promoting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

On the afternoon of last Thursday, Xi Jinping went to a riverside district in the city of Nantong where he inspected local efforts in improving the overall environment along the shoreline of the Yangtze River, as well as the enforcement of fishing ban policies.

Early Friday morning last week, Wu Zhan, a resident of Linjiang Jiayuan Community, Chongchuan District, Nantong City, showed his friends around the riverside to appreciate the autumn scenery. Speaking of the encountering with General Secretary Xi Jinping, Wu was still full of excitement.

During his inspection tour, Xi Jinping said he was here to learn about local efforts in overhauling the environment as he came to inspect the Yangtze Economic Belt and the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

After learning that the dirty and messy places in the past have been turned into attractive parks, Xi said a happy life has been achieved through the hard work of all.

More prominence should be given to protect urban environment and ensure better quality of economic development and people's lives, Xi said.

In recent years, Nantong has promoted the ecological restoration and protection of Wushan riverside area as an important measure to protect the ecology of the Yangtze River and promote the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt by repairing 5.5 kilometers along the river bank, increasing the forest area by about 6 square kilometers, and gradually building a green corridor along the Yangtze River.

During the inspection tour, Xi Jinping spoke highly of the efforts made by the local authorities in improving the overall environment along the shoreline of the Yangtze River, as well as the enforcement of fishing ban policies.

Chongchuan District had dismantled 14 registered Yangtze River fishing boats by paying out more than 7.4 million yuan in compensation.

At present, Nantong is preparing a city-wide land and space plan, putting the protection and restoration of the Yangtze River's ecological environment in an overwhelming position.
