East China’s Jiangsu province will make unremitting efforts to promote steady economic growth in a bid to strengthen the protection of the ecological environment and the pollution and carbon reduction, according to the 7th meeting of the CPC Provincial Committee of Finance and Economics held Friday in Nanjing.
General Secretary Xi Jinping presided over the ninth meeting of the Central Finance and Economics Committee and delivered an important speech, giving important instructions on promoting healthy economic development and CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, according to a statement released after the meeting.
Efforts must be made to give full play to the important role of the platform economy, shore up the province’s competitive advantages, promote the growth momentum with the platform economy, and strengthen risk awareness and bottom-line thinking, the statement said.
Measures must be taken to create a good market environment, promote the healthy development of private enterprises, strengthen supervision and anti-monopoly measures and prevent the disorderly expansion of capital, promote the healthy and sustainable development of the platform economy, and better serve high-quality development and high-quality life, said the statement.
People should come to be aware from the overall and strategic perspective that carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality are a major strategic decision made by the Party Central Committee and also a broad and profound economic and social systemic change, according to the statement.
Measures must be taken to strengthen the sense of responsibility, achieve the goal of carbon peak emission ahead of schedule, continue to promote high-quality development, accelerate the overall green transformation of the economy and society, and make more contributions to national economic development and ecological construction, said the statement.
Addressing the Leaders Summit on Climate on Earth Day (April 22), President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's pledge that its carbon dioxide emissions will peak before 2030 and the country will achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
China will seize time to formulate an action plan for peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030. The country will support areas with favorable conditions to peak the emissions ahead of the schedule, according to the annual Central Economic Work Conference held early this year.
China is expected to raise 2 percentage points of energy consumption during the 14th Five-Year Plan between 2021 and 2025 period with the proportion of fossil fuels declining to 20-30 percent before 2060. To achieve that goal, the country requires massive amounts of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels. China is rich in clean energy, including solar and wind energy and hydropower.
