East China’s Jiangsu province launched a series of activities to observe the 34th annual session of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The provincial department of public security held a ceremony to appoint 15 members of the expert team for the prevention of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Experts will carry out technical research and build an influential anti-drug think tank with national influence.

Public security departments in Changzhou, Nantong, Huai'an, and Yancheng visited communities, schools, and rural areas to help residents enhance their ability to distinguish drugs and warn people to stay away from drugs.

Jiangsu had registered nearly 210 thousand drug abusers as of the end of 2020, according to a police bulletin released recently.

Police in Jiangsu have confiscated 1950 cases of drug abuse and illicit trafficking by detaining 2934 suspects and busting 484.43 kilos of drugs.

In the meantime, the courts in Jiangsu have reported a decline in the number of cases filed for drug abuse and illicit trafficking over the past three years, indicating a continuous turnaround in the crackdown on drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The United Nation’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26 each year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. This day is supported by individuals, communities and various organizations all over the world.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime or UNODC has, over the years, been actively involved in launching campaigns to mobilize support for drug control. The UNODC often teams up with other organizations and encourages people in society to actively take part in these campaigns.

Governments, organizations and individuals in many countries, including Vietnam, Borneo and Thailand, have actively participated in promotional events and larger scale activities, such as public rallies and mass media involvement, to promote the awareness of dangers associated with illicit drugs.
