Typhoon In-Fa hits Jiangsu, moves northward

Typhoon In-Fa swept Wujiang district of Suzhou city, Jiangsu province, at five Monday afternoon after making a second landfall at around 9:50 a.m. Monday in the coastal area of Pinghu City, east China's Zhejiang Province, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Zhejiang on Saturday upgraded its emergency response to Level I, the highest level. All high-speed trains bound for Shanghai had been suspended since Sunday. This also marks the first time one typhoon has made landfall twice in Zhejiang’s history, according to the local Zhejiang Meteorological Station.

Shanghai's meteorological authority said that the city is possible to continuously undergo rainstorms and strong winds until Tuesday. At 11:00 a.m. Monday, due to the weakening of In-Fa,the city updated the typhoon orange warning signal to a yellow warning signal.

With a maximum wind force of 9 near the epicenter, In-fa moved to the northwest at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour, while its intensity gradually weakened.

Affected by the typhoon, 13 towns in Yancheng and Yangzhou reported precipitation of more than 20mm from 13:00 to 14:00 on Monday.

The 24 towns in Suzhou and Huai'an experienced a maximum wind speed of level 8 or higher.

The Provincial Water Resources Department issued an orange flood warning for the Taipu River and a blue flood warning for the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River.

Only small vehicles are allowed to pass through the Chongming-Qidong Bridge at a speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour, while the Sutong Bridge and Jiangyin Bridge have set a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour.

Coach and ferry services across the province have been suspended while traffic control has been enforced in major lakes.

More than 1,700 construction workers were temporarily evacuated to East Taihu Primary School in Wujiang District, Suzhou City, and authorities provided a lot of mineral water, snacks and biscuits.

More than 10 thousand residents from dilapidated houses and migrant workers in Changshu were evacuated to sports arenas and gyms to avoid risks from the typhoon.

Authorities in Rudong County evacuated residents in Yanghou Development Zone to places of safety.

Fishing boats in Ganhu district of Lianyungang and Binhan County were fastened with all the boats moored in the port.

335529 people across the province were evacuated to places of safety and 19 thousand fishing boats were ordered to stay put in the port.

Various public venues, including parks, sports stadiums, libraries, museums, in several districts, especially those at coastal regions, were closed on Monday.

The typhoon swept Jiangsu from south to north, bringing downpours ranging from 40mm to 80 mm.

Work teams have been dispatched to the affected regions to inspect losses and provide guidance to local departments.

In-fa is expected to move further northwest inland at a speed of 5-10 kilometers per hour, with its strength gradually weakening.
