Jiangsu speeds up technological breakthroughs for innovation-powered growth

East Chinas Jiangsu province has focused on its advantages in cutting-edge technologies to accelerate the construction of major scientific and technological innovation platforms, enhance basic research and original innovation capabilities, and strive to gather more national strategic scientific and technological forces. 

Since its establishment last year, the Gusu Laboratory of Jiangsu Materials Science, with a total investment of 20 billion yuan, has carried out 28 directional basic research projects to seek breakthroughs in technological bottlenecks and achieve technological breakthroughs in material science.

Researchers from the G2112 project of Gusu Laboratory are drilling small holes of about 3 nanometers in the base material of 2 mm square.

This extremely subtle materials science research is an important part of the development of the fourth generation of gene sequencing technology-solid-state nano-pore sequencing technology.

At present, this disruptive technology has begun to take shape in Gusu Laboratory, and upon its mass production, it will greatly reduce the cost of gene sequencing.

The profound adjustment of the international economic and technological competition has forced China to rely on independent innovation to achieve high-quality development. In 2019, the Jiangsu Provincial Government established a leading group for major technological innovation platforms to select the first batch of major technological innovation platform cultivation projects.

The launch of Gusu Laboratory, Purple Mountain Laboratory, and Taihu Laboratory over more than two years has helped Jiangsu to gain an upper hand in national strategic scientific and technological force.

The State Key Laboratory of Organic Electronics and Information Display at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications has provided core technologies for flexible displays that are widely used in mobile phones and tablet computers.

Jiangsu has built 29 major technological innovation platforms, recruited more than 3,000 talents of various types, and carried out strategic innovation cooperation with more than 300 domestic and foreign universities, scientific research institutes, and leading enterprises.

In 2020, Jiangsu's major scientific research platforms applied for more than 400 patents and participated in the formulation of a number of international and domestic standards.
