Digging on the country’s first large shield tunnel underneath a high-speed railway was fulfilled Tuesday in Suzhou city, Jiangsu province.
The shield tunnel was constructed to connect the southern side of Tongjing Road with its northern side. The road has been halved by the high-speech railway for the past 10 years.
The fulfillment of the digging project has enabled the 490-meter tunnel shield section to continuously pass through the Shantang River, the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and the North Ring Expressway to ensure that the scenic rivers and ancient buildings in the old city are protected.
The expansion of the road is expected to alleviate the transport pressure on the trunk roads in the urban areas and promote the development of the Tiger Hill scenic area and the surrounding areas.
