On Dec. 21, the Weng Tonghe Calligraphy Rubbings Exhibition opened at the Weng Tonghe Museum, which is a special event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the museum. On display are 30 rubbings of letters between Weng Tonghe and his colleagues and friends such as Li Hongzhang, Tan Zhonglin, Wang Mingluan, and Yang Yifang, showing the unique charm of Weng’s calligraphy.

Weng Tonghe, tutor of Emperor Tongzhi and Emperor Guangxu in the late Qing Dynasty, was a scholar-official who was upright, honest and patriotic. In 1991, the Caiyi Hall, Weng’s former residence, was donated by his great-great-grandson Weng Wange to the Changshu municipal government, which was transformed into the Weng Tonghe Museum. In 1996, the Caiyi Hall was selected into the list of the 4th batch of the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council.
