East China’s Jiangsu province saw the first sleet in winter on Wednesday which coincides with Lesser Cold or Xiaohan, one of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. The meteorological department reminded people to keep warm during freezing weather.
On Wednesday morning, Lianyungang ushered in the first snow in 2022. The Huaguo Mountain was covered with frost and snow, crystal clear, like pear blossoms in full bloom.
In the water curtain cave, the older monkeys were seen squatting comfortably on the guardrail to enjoy the snow scene, while the monkey babies were obviously frightened by the sudden changes in the weather so that they hug the monkey mothers tightly and feel the difference.
"Snow fell in the northern part of Huaibei,mainly Xuzhou,and the Ganyu and Xilian Island areas in Lianyungang
Sleet or snow was reported in the southern part of Yangzhou and the northern part of Taizhou."Zhang Jing, Chief Forecaster, Jiangsu Meteorological Observatory
The rest of the province experienced moderate rains and heavy rains were reported in the areas along the Yangtze River and southern Jianghuai, which eased the dryness of autumn and winter.
The weather turns fine on Thursday, and a weak cold air will see a drop in the temperature by about 4 degrees Celsius with the minimum temperature in most areas below zero.
"On January 7th, 8th and 9th,the minimum temperature in Huaibei area will drop to about -3℃,in southern Jiangsu it will be between 0℃ and 2℃,and in the central region it will be between -1℃ and -2℃.The maximum temperature will be basically maintained between 8°C and 12°C."said Zhang Jing, Chief Forecaster, Jiangsu Meteorological Observatory
During Lesser Cold, most areas in China enters the bitter cold days of winter. The ground and rivers are frozen. The cold air from the north moves southward continuously.
Entering Lesser Cold, people start to prepare for the Spring Festival by getting busy writing Spring Festival couplets, making paper-cuts for window decoration, and going to the market to buy New Year paintings.
