The Yangtze River Delta is expected to send 50 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 16%, during China’s annual Spring Festival Travel Rush or Chunyun that will start on January 17th.

The Spring Festival railway transportation plan for the Yangtze River Delta was released on Thursday. The travel rush, the largest human migration in the world, also known as chunyun, will start on Jan 17 and end on Feb 25.

During the Spring Festival transport period, the railway in the Yangtze River Delta will send 50 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 16%, averaging 1.25 million passengers per day.

In the meantime, authorities in China have rolled out COVID-19 prevention measures on Thursday to prepare for the upcoming 40-day Spring Festival travel rush.

China's national railway network, the most common means of long-distance travel, is expected to see 280 million passenger trips during that period, a year-on-year increase of 28.5 percent, said Li Wenxin, deputy general manager of the China State Railway Group, the national railway operator.

For the 2022 travel rush, most people leaving for their hometowns should provide proof of negative nucleic acid test results within 48 hours before departure.

As part of the measures to cope with the risk, the State Council's Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism recently sent 15 teams around the country to increase its oversight of COVID-19 control work during the holiday.
