Wuxi tops Chinese cities in per capita GDP in 2021

Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province saw its per capita GDP reach 187,400 yuan ($29,465) in 2021, ranking first among all Chinese cities, according to a statement released by the Wuxi statistics bureau on Feb 10.

Per capita GDP is an important indicator of a region's economic wellbeing. In 2021, Wuxi continued to pursue the high-quality development of its economy and society.

The city generated 1.4 trillion yuan ($220.93 billion) in GDP in 2021, up 8.8 percent from 2020 with an average growth rate of 6.2 percent over two years.

The added value of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries reached 13.03 billion yuan, 671.05 billion yuan, and 716.24 billion yuan, respectively, year-on-year increases of 1.3 percent, 9.9 percent and 7.9 percent.

The city's industrial production continued to develop steadily in 2021. The added value of its industries above designated size was up 12.9 percent year-on-year, reaching 492.64 billion yuan. 

The deep interplay between technology and industry continues to consolidate the foundation for industrial upgrading. In 2021, the contribution rate of scientific and technological progress in the city was 67.2 percent, ranking first in Jiangsu province for the ninth year in a row.

In 2021, the city's digital economy grew by 10 percent annually. The output of core industries of the digital economy exceeded 600 billion yuan, and industries closely related to the digital economy such as information transmission, software and information technology services increased by 15.2 percent year-on-year, which will stimulate the city's employment market.
