Suzhou’s economic development has made rapid progress in the past 5 years.
The city’s GDP was close to 1.7 trillion yuan in 2017 and exceeded 1.8 and 1.9 trillion yuan in 2018 and 2019 respectively. In 2020, Suzhou became the sixth city and the first prefecture-level city in the country with GDP exceeding 2 trillion yuan. In 2021, its GDP surpassed 2.2 trillion yuan, ranking first in the province and sixth in the country, with a year-on-year increase of 8.7%.
In the past five years, Suzhou has made unremitting efforts to develop the advanced manufacturing industry, encourage new business formats and models, boost the digital economy, and accelerate the development of modern service industries, so as to further optimize its industrial structure. In 2020, the added value of the city’s service sector reached 1,059.8 billion yuan, exceeding the 1-trillion-yuan threshold for the first time. And in 2021, the added value of the primary industry was 18.97 billion yuan, decreasing by 0.8%, but the added value of the secondary and tertiary industries increased by 9.5% and 8.1% to 1,087.28 and 1,165.58 billion yuan respectively.
