The Jiangsu water conservancy department has taken all measures to coordinate flood discharge as rainfalls have been reported since March 16 in the Taihu Lake and Huaihe River basins.
Spring flood refers to the obvious flooding process in spring, which occurs from March to May. Since the turn of this century, Jiangsu has reported about five spring floods.
Affected by the local rainfall and the incoming water from the upper and middle reaches, the water level of Taihu Lake has risen significantly, and the water levels of Wuxi, Suzhou and Wangting of the Grand Canal once exceeded the warning level.
The water conservancy department continued to increase the flood discharge flow of Taihu Lake and organized the sluices along the Taihu Lake to discharge the water with full force.
The Changshu Water Control Project of Wangyu River has opened the six-hole control gates on the east and west sides, and continuously discharges water into the Yangtze River.

According to the dispatching instructions of the Provincial Flood Control Center, we opened the control gate on March 21 to fully drain water by discharging 16 million cubic meters of water every day. As of 8:00 this morning, we have drained 117 million cubic meters.
Rainfalls have also been reported in upper and middle reaches of the Huaihe River since March 16, pushing up the water level of the Hongze Lake.
The water conservancy department increased the flood discharge from Hongze Lake and coordinated all parties to ensure the safety of flood control.
The Sanhe Sluice Gate has released 1,200 cubic meters of floodwater per second, totaling 500 million cubic meters.
Sun Song, Deputy Director of Sanhe Sluice Gate Administration, said that they have arranged for staff to be on duty for flood prevention 24 hours a day in accordance with the requirements during flood season. They have also strengthened the inspection of the project, grasped the information of rain and water conditions, discovered and eliminated potential safety hazards in time, and ensured the safe flood discharge of the Sanhe Sluice Project.
As of Monday afternoon, the water level of Taihu Lake remained at 3.62 meters, 0.18 meters below the warning level. The water level of the Jiangba section of Hongze Lake remained at 13.45 meters, 0.15 meters below the warning water level.
The Provincial Department of Water Resources will coordinate and arrange lake regulation and storage and flood discharge, so as to minimize the impact of flood discharge on industrial and agricultural production, especially the growth of wheat in flood-drenched rivers.
