On July 2, 2022, the social practice team, “Mr. China, telling China’s stories to the world”, from College of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, went to the town of Taji, in China’s eastern Jiangsu province. Having personally visited and explored the life of the townsfolk, the team members have captured, on videotape, one specimen of China’s rural revitalization and told some Chinese stories of success in the new era.
2022年7月2日，南京航空航天大学外国语学院“Mr. China向世界讲述中国故事”社会实践团队赴江苏省淮安市金湖县塔集镇，通过走访调研和亲身体会，见证中国大地上塔集小镇的乡村振兴路，用视频制作的方式展现新时代中国故事。
Raindrops on the lotus leaves begin to disappear at dawn. The lotus flowers, silky and pure, stand gracefully over the water. As a breeze puffs across the lake, the lotus leaves start to sway elegantly.
Hehuadang, in the town of Taji, Jinhu County, covers an area of 22.4 square kilometers. With Jiangsu- and Anhui-style vernacular houses dotted around, the spectacular picture looks like heaven on earth. It is exactly this picturesque land and local characteristics that Taji relies on to invigorate its economy and develop its tourism. Eventually, the once unknown small town has become a nationally famous tourist destination.
叶上初阳干宿雨，水面清圆，一一风荷举。万亩荷塘和江淮民居交相呼应，形成了一幅独特的灵动图景。荷花荡位于江苏省淮安市金湖县塔集镇境内，总面积22.4平方公里。塔集镇正是依托这片美丽土地的本土特色打造旅游品牌，从名不见经传的小地方成长为全国闻名的旅游景点。
Part One: the unfurled lotus leaf is just revealing its tip above water, whose faint scent spreads in the Taji town
一、小荷才露尖尖角，江淮塔集香藕荷
At the entrance of the Class 4A scenic spot stands a welcoming signboard, reading "VISITING HEHUADANG, AND MEETING FRIENDS WHO ALSO LOVE LOTUS". Skirting around the Gaoyou Lake, the water surface itself makes a pleasant picture, rippling and glistening. After a few miles along the dyke of the lake, our hike into the scenic area begins. We first see lotus leaves swaying gently in the summer breeze, and there in the distance stand some white windmills, whose sails are whirling away. Then, we come to the Lotus Plaza, where we are greeted by the Lotus Fairy, a statue carved out of white marble. The Lotus Fairy comes with a bearing, so it looks like she was descending from heaven. Her floating trails, graceful poise, bright eyes, beautiful face and soft smile impress us as though she were attracted by such a lovely view, too. Engraved briefly below the sculpture is a local legend about a lady surnamed Zhao. Her fidelity to her husband had aroused the empathy of the people, so they set up this Lotus Fairy sculpture in her honor.
站在荷花荡景区入口，书写着“藕遇荷花荡，莲结天下缘”的标识牌向我们展示着荷花荡的热情好客。沿着高邮湖堤前行数里，日光下的湖面波光粼粼。走进景区，微风荡漾，莲叶醒目，远远望去，笔直挺立的白色风车旋转不停。领略了荷的馨香后，我们来到了荷花广场，一尊汉白玉的荷花仙子雕塑映入眼帘。荷花仙子好似从天而降，裙裾飘飘，体态端盈，明眸四顾，娇容含春，为荷花荡的美景胜境所吸引，所倾倒，所陶醉。雕塑下方的碑文镌刻的是当地赵娘忠贞不渝的传说，百姓感念其冰清玉洁，故而为其立“荷花仙子”塑像以传千秋。
Strolling in Hehuadang, we can’t help marveling at the splendor around: the size of the lake, the green ripples, and wafts of faint sweet smell of the flowers. Surely the lotus flowers are the leading role in this summer beauty contest. Some are still tender pink buds, some are in full bloom, standing gracefully on the ripples and holding their cream-colored seedpods. You cannot take your eyes off them. Far out into the lake, fishing boats are drifting amid the dense lotus leaves. The houses in the distance are built near the water. Their white walls, red tiles, and wicker gates remind us of the unique features of the traditional Jiangsu and Anhui building style.
置身于荷花荡内，只见百里湖面上绿波荡漾，风卷荷叶，清香四溢。徐徐前行，荷花竞放，嫩白的花骨朵儿含苞欲放，盛开的荷花含笑迎风，出落得亭亭玉立，露出嫩黄色的小莲蓬，叫人难以挪开视线，赞叹不已。行至深处，一连串的渔船漂在水面上，大片大片的荷叶环抱四周。远处的屋舍傍水而建，白墙红瓦，青砖柴扉，独具江淮风味。
When we walk along the banks, our nostrils are filled with the faint fragrance in the air. The vast lake is planted with a variety of lotuses, and the scenery is beyond comparison in summer. Featuring the clear lake water and the lovely lotuses, Hehuadang is veritably a beauty. In recent years, capitalizing on the unique ecological zone, the local residents have not only enriched their daily lives, but also developed their special industries in full swing.
站在湖堤上，阵阵微风送来缕缕清香。这片广阔的湖荡中种植了品种多样的荷藕，每到夏季风景独好。荷花荡以景动人，以水为媒，塑造了“颜值达人”新形象。近年来依托着独特的荷花荡生态区，当地居民不仅丰富了日常生活，还将特色产业发展得如火如荼。
Part Two: the beautiful scenery of Hehuadang unfolds, revealing stories of the locals prospering together
二、赏荷花荡长卷，书写致富颂歌
The residents of Taji have exploited their ecological resources to the full, ensuring that lotus is cultivated throughout the township. Regarding the main produce ― lotus roots, the local people have established production bases, expanded coverage, introduced deep processing enterprises, and developed beverages, instant foods and other products with the lotus roots as the main ingredient. While extending the industrial and value chain, they have built an online shopping platform “Lotusbay”, developed rural e-commerce, expanded the sales channels of agricultural products, and helped the farmers become rich.
塔集镇依托现有生态资源，发挥“君到塔集见，家家尽长荷”的生态资源优势，逐步开拓出了一条靠荷生财的致富之路。当地居民打造荷藕养殖基地，扩大荷藕种植面积，还引进了荷藕精深加工企业，开发了许多荷藕饮料、特色速食等产品。延伸了特色农产品产业链和价值链的同时，构建起“荷你一起全球购”平台，大力发展农村电商经济，有效地拓展了农产品的销售渠道，真正带领农民们走上了增收致富的道路。
In addition to lotus root products, the locals have launched many programs of efficient facility agriculture. They raise high-quality rice, grapes, nectarines, and poultry. They have also introduced mixed farming of lotus roots, shrimp and crabs, among others.
除了荷藕特色农产品外，塔集镇的个体居民们开发了许多高效设施农业。他们积极培育优质稻米、葡萄油桃，发展家禽养殖、荷藕虾蟹混养等多种特色产业。
Green paddy rice is waving in the wind, and Shine Muscat Grapes smells like rose. On the rural market, there are all kinds of special agricultural products, such as lotus roots, lotus seedpods, water chestnuts, grapes, and tomatoes; the white round lotus seeds are solid and refreshing. Medicinally, they can invigorate the spleen, relieve diarrhea, and soothe the nerves.
绿油油的水稻在风中摇曳，颗颗丰盈的阳光玫瑰果真透着一股淡淡的玫瑰味道。乡间的集市里，莲藕莲蓬、菱角、葡萄、西红柿等特色农产品应有尽有；莲蓬的果肉粒大饱满，洁白圆润，散发阵阵清香，不仅可以清爽去火，还有补脾止泻、养心安神的功效。
The local poultry farming features the symbiosis of raising geese and other aquatic animals. It is a real sight to see flocks of white geese roaming around. Here, in summer, the cooked spicy crayfish is a must, and fresh shrimp stewed in spicy soup is quite inviting. The crayfish feast in Taji town depends a lot on the polyculture of the lotus roots, shrimp, and crabs. The efficient mode of cultivation has greatly improved the output and quality of crayfish. The large, meaty, and juicy crayfish have drawn tourists from far and wide.
在塔集镇，“鹅塘共生”是当地家禽养殖业的特色，成群结队的大白鹅成为一道亮丽的风景线，荷塘边、池塘里到处都有它们的身影。麻辣小龙虾是夏夜餐桌的主角，鲜嫩的虾肉，香辣的汤汁，让人垂涎欲滴。塔集镇的龙虾宴得益于本地荷藕虾蟹混养产业的发展，高效的藕虾种植使小龙虾产量和品质都有了极大提升，个大肉多、鲜美多汁的小龙虾让许多游客慕名前来。
The Taji people have developed efficient facility agriculture. They cultivated agricultural products such as watermelons and nectarines, and established a variety of companies that specialize in the mixed culture of lotus roots, shrimps, and crabs. In addition, the online and offline lotus product exhibition and sales platform created by township enterprises in the new rural community of Hehuadang “Lotusbay” has led to the joint development of lotus planting, deep processing, and lotus cultural tourist industries.
塔集镇的个体居民发展⾼效设施农业，培育了西⽠油桃等农产品，形成了以荷藕虾蟹混养为代表的多种特⾊产业。 除此之外，塔集镇乡镇企业在荷花荡新型农村社区打造的线上线下荷产品展销平台“荷你⼀起全球购”，更带动了荷种植、荷深加⼯、荷⽂化旅游服务产业联动发展。
Revitalizing the village with industries and enriching the people with local products, Taji town has created a new version of “hardcore power”.
以业兴村，以产富民，塔集镇结合当地特色，打造了“硬核实力”新型产业链。
Part Three: carrying on the tradition with a view to rural revitalization is up to the present generation
三、乡村振兴，继往开来，还看今朝
Jinhu Lianxiang dance, a peculiar art, is an intangible cultural heritage of Jiangsu Province, endowed with the unique simple unassuming lifestyle of Jinhu county. The style of the dance is smooth, lively and quite entertaining, and it is easy to learn for both young and old. Lianxiang dance has over the centuries developed more than 30 dramas, which fall into two broad types: single spear and double spear. Each is self-contained, and all of the dramas are related. Accompanied by music, the performer now hits the ground with the end of a spear, now clanks the two spears, all to a pleasant rhythm.
莲湘舞是江苏省非物质文化遗产，融合了金湖特有的淳朴民风，风格上平稳流畅、活泼轻快，方法上简单易学，老少皆宜，具有较高的观赏性。经过上百年的几代民间艺人的不断改进和创新，金湖莲湘舞演变发展至今三十余套，有单枪和双枪两种，每套自成一体，套套相连。 伴随音乐，时而枪头击地，时而双枪对击，产生明快的节奏，令人赏心悦目。
As our boat slowly move forward waking up the calm water, we are treated to the local Lianxiang dance performance in Taji town. The dancers are in the lotus clumps, dancing in a tiny boat. To the tune of melodious music, each of them holds a lotus flower, now raising the flowers, now extending them outwards, in a graceful manner. Our yacht is drifting off in the quiet river, tearing us away from the dancers, and leaving us savoring the wonderful performance.
随着小舟破开平静的水面徐徐向前，呈现在我们面前的便是塔集镇当地的莲湘舞表演。舞者们置身荷花丛中，在一叶扁舟上起舞。伴随着悠扬的乐声，她们手持一枚荷花，时而抬腕低眉，时而轻舒云手，使人如痴如醉。小船随着缓缓流淌的河水远去，舞者也随之离开我们的视线，留给游客无尽的回味。
Along the way, we see the villagers working in the endless green fields with farming machinery. The sweat on their foreheads and the thriving crops embellish the real and harmonious picture.
一路上，我们看到村民开着农用机器去到田间，在这一望无际的碧绿田野中细细耕耘，滴落的汗珠同这饱满茁壮的庄稼一同点缀着这真实、和谐的画面。
Unlike many years ago, Taji has taken on a brand new look. Today’s Taji has struck a balance between its clear waters and green mountains on the one hand, and growing wealth on the other hand. How has Taji town developed over the years? What is its development plan?
Here is the answer the mayor gave us: “Taji town is blessed with the lotus culture, kiln culture, and a unique ecology. Years ago, we commissioned a famous design company to help make a long-term development plan for us. Following the plan, Taji has established the kiln culture industrial park, lotus culture industrial park and two Class 4A scenic spots. The future development is based on our abundant resources, like the water, lotus and kiln culture, which will be combined to promote our economy. Specifically, we will continue to combine lotus cultivation with crayfish raising. This mode is recognized by the provincial agricultural community as a success in creating wealth because the crayfish thus produced are of better flavor. Now, they sell well in the province and beyond, such as Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guangdong. The second is raising crabs in the lotus ponds, and the third is raising fish in the lotus ponds. Some other aquatic animals and plants, such as rice, are also included. Shrimp and crabs are raised in the rice paddies. With rational utilization of resources, we have launched ecological and natural breeding projects, which are highlights of the local economy.
多年前的塔集镇还不似今天这样，将绿水青山和金山银山共同写入这幅秀美画卷中。塔集镇是如何发展的？今后的发展规划是怎样的？塔集镇镇长对于塔集镇的发展之路交出了这样一份答卷：“塔集镇依托荷文化、窑文化，结合当地的生态，邀请江苏本地有名的设计单位，进行了长远的设计，目前已经形成了窑文化产业园、荷文化产业园和两个4A级景区。未来的发展总体还是依托自然资源、生态资源，水文化、荷文化、窑文化三方面结合、共同推进发展进程。细一点来说，农业方面就是荷藕套龙虾，这个产业目前被江苏农业农村群确定为一个好的发展致富项目，荷藕套龙虾的优良品质，使其目前在整个江苏以及上海浙江广东等地销售前景都非常好；再有就是荷藕养蟹、荷藕养鱼，在荷藕里套养一些其他的水生物譬如水稻等等，水稻里面还可以套养虾和蟹。层层嵌套、合理利用资源，我们形成的是生态养殖和自然养殖项目，这也是塔集镇的特色。”
Under a small bridge near a cottage is a stream. The trees and flowers flatter each other. Here, in Taji, unfolds a scroll of the rich and happy people enjoying an idyllic life.
“小桥流水人家，绿树红花掩映。”在风光宜人的塔集镇内，“村美民富生活乐”的田园画卷徐徐铺展。
Today, the township has the local people united with its folk culture, and draws tourists as well. The town is promoting tourism with its diversified culture, leading the new fashion of “integration of culture and tourism”.
在今天，塔集镇用民俗文化凝聚着人，更以特色文化吸引着人，以文促旅，多元发展，引领了“文旅融合”的新风尚。
Walking around the idyllic community and courtyards, we see not only the natural beauty, but also faces beaming with pleasure. “Now I’ve seen everything before me lush and green, / Green water ripples here and there with the wind.” The people of Taji town rely on their wisdom and hands to create their own future and embark on the broad road unique to Taji.
我们走在江苏省淮安市金湖县塔集的田园社区、庄台院落，眼见的是美景，更是村民们⼀张张洋溢着幸福笑容的脸庞。“便觉眼前生意满，东风吹水绿参差”，塔集镇的人民靠着智慧与双手雕刻着自己的未来，走上了属于塔集镇的康庄大道。
