Jiangsu launched the 2022 Yangtze finless porpoise scientific survey in Nanjing on Monday. Let’s take a close look.

At 10 am on Monday, two scientific research ships set off from the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River to start a 10-day scientific survey of the Yangtze finless porpoise.

The scientific expedition team consisting of more than 120 expedition members and more than 20 fishery administration boats will go to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which is about 1,600 km away, including Dongting Lake, Poyang Lake and some tributaries of the Yangtze River where they will carry out surveys on the population and distribution of Yangtze finless porpoises, and the quality of habitat environment.

This investigation is the fourth scientific investigation of finless porpoises in the whole Yangtze River basin after the ones in 2006, 2012 and 2017, making it of great significance for understanding the living conditions of finless porpoises after the ten-year fishing ban.

Compared with previous surveys, this survey will also adopt two new monitoring technologies, the image-assisted observation system and environmental DNA technology, and establish a continuous Yangtze finless porpoise observation team and a basin-based collaborative monitoring mechanism, so as to provide a basis for the periodic monitoring of the Yangtze River in the future and establish a system support for the periodic monitoring and inspection of the Yangtze finless porpoise and other special projects in the future.
