On December 9, 2020, the first foreign-related commercial case was heard at the Suzhou International Commercial Court. Yu Shuijuan, the president of the court, presided over the trial.
“In fact, I didn't sleep well the night before”, Yu Shuijuan, President of Suzhou International Commercial Court said “because at that time, I tried my best to think that we must make the first trial perfect”.
The first trial of the first international commercial court set up in a prefecture level city in China attracted the attention of 500 thousand netizens nationwide.
Generally speaking, foreign-related cases often take a long time because they involve document translation and legal application. The trial of the case innovatively used intelligent trial systems such as "instant translation" electronic cross examination and "instant query" legal article retrieval, replaced the thick paper files with electronic screens, greatly improved the efficiency of the case trial so that the case was closed in less than half a year.
Yu Shuijuan is exactly the participant, user and promoter of the "Suzhou Mode of Smart Trial".
Yu Shuijuan said that in each interface of their intelligent trial system, every piece of evidence and law will be immediately displayed on all their screens in real time.
Yu Shuijuan graduated from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. After leaving the campus, she entered the banking system and became a lawyer. One year later, she won the first place in the written examination and was admitted to the Suzhou Intermediate People's Court, becoming a clerk and a judge step by step.
“I want to keep learning on my own initiative. Sometimes it is difficult to knock this hammer down”, Yu Shuijuan said, “we must try our best to restore the objective facts from a neutral point of view, and then clarify the legal responsibility”.
According to Li Cheng, Judge of Suzhou International Commercial Court, when they were busiest, they had to work overtime on weekends. President Yu organized professional studies, and they sat together to study and discuss some judicial interpretations or the minutes of the Supreme Court recently released.
Under the leadership of Yu Shuijuan, the Suzhou International Commercial Court has engaged 16 professionals in various fields across the country to actively explore diversified dispute resolution mechanisms, initiate neutral assessment of foreign-related commercial disputes, and create efficient personalized solutions for cases.
In the past two years of operation, the Suzhou International Commercial Court has accepted 2018 cases, concluded 1786 cases with the target amount exceeding 8 billion yuan. The case involves 43 countries and regions, including the United States, Japan and Singapore.
Yu Shuijuan said that their goal is also to build their court into a new image and brand in opening up and innovation in Suzhou and even the whole country.
