East China’s Jiangsu province has spared no effort to treat COVID-19 infections as 850 thousand medical staff are fighting on the front line of epidemic prevention and control to ensure people's medical needs.
Near 12 noon, in the emergency room of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, Dr. Zhou Hao was seen receiving critically ill patients. After working for more than four hours, he had a sore throat and was unable to afford the time to drink water.
“I received about 40 to 50 patients in one morning, basically 8 to 10 patients in an hour”, Zhou Hao, Chief Physician of Emergency Medical Center of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital said.
According to Chen Xufeng, Director of Emergency Medical Center of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, so far, all doctors have been infected with COVID-19, and now they have no time to rest. They receive nearly 1000 patients every day.
In order to ensure the normal operation of emergency services, while medical staff remain committed to their posts, the hospital has made unremitting efforts to support the anti-epidemic front line by allocating backbone strength to the emergency department. At the same time, the emergency patients were admitted to the relevant wards in time to reduce the emergency pressure.
Wang Xiaodong, Vice President of the Party Committee of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, said that the hospital made overall arrangements for medical resources, increased the number of fever outpatient wards and lung infection treatment wards, freed up nearly 300 beds, equipped with specialized doctors and nurses, and put the backbone of the force into the front line of epidemic prevention.
Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has witnessed a surge in the number of patients receiving infusion and critically ill patients in recent days. According to the requirements of the hospital epidemic prevention and control expert group, the emergency ward was adjusted to the ward for COVID-19 positive patients, and the EICU was responsible for receiving and treating the positive severe cases.
In the process of long and intensive work, many medical staff have been infected one after another.
Guo Tao, Director of Emergency Center of Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, said that the recent period is the most difficult time for medical staff. More than 70% of the medical staff have been on duty in spite of their illness. They will return to their posts once their symptoms improve a little.
Fever clinic shoulders the responsibility of treating fever patients. Every medical staff in the Infection Department, the Medical Department and the Nursing Department of the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine are trying their best to save lives and help the wounded.
“The outpatient volume of fever clinics has reached 20 times of the normal outpatient volume”, Qiao Fei, Director of Infection Department of Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, said “at present, 95% of the medical staff are committed to their posts despite their illness”.
The department of pediatrics in Jiangbei District of the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is under great pressure by receiving two or three hundred patients every day.
Statistics from the provincial health commission showed that Jiangsu reported 203600 fever outpatients on Sunday. All major hospitals in the province have made every effort to cope with the peak of medical treatment, and further strengthened medical treatment for children, the elderly and other key vulnerable groups.
