Authorities in Zhenjiang and Yancheng released fish fry recently to replenish the dwindling fish stock in the Yangtze River and the Yellow Sea.

More than 8 million silver carp and bighead carp and more than 10000 Chinese high-fin banded catfish were released into the Yangtze River, which will play an important role in purifying the water quality of the Yangtze River and enriching fishery resources.

Zhenjiang has 293.8 kilometers of the Yangtze River shoreline. According to the monitoring results of fishery resources, the species and individual weight of fishes in Zhenjiang section of the Yangtze River have increased significantly since the launch of the fishing ban three years ago with aquatic organisms such as swordfish and finless porpoise frequently spotted.

Since 2002, Zhenjiang has invested nearly 30 million yuan in various releasing that added up to 201 million fish fry of various types.

“Improper release of fish fry can actually cause damage to our ecological environment. Some people release crucian carp, black fish, crayfish or koi by purchasing them in the market which are prohibited. The release of fish fry requires procurement from qualified enterprises and the fish fry must undergo quarantine test before being released. In addition, the release process needs to be reported to the fishery and fishery administration department”, Ma Liang, Deputy Director of Fishery Department of Zhenjiang Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said.

Binhai County released 8 million swimming crab, 15 million jellyfish and 90 million Chinese prawns, with a total value of 2.2 million yuan. All fry were transported to fishing boats and released to the designated sea area.

These fish fry will effectively increase aquatic biological resources, repair coastal ecological institutions, and further improve the marine ecological environment.
