East China's Jiangsu Province launched on Wednesday an anti-flood level-IV emergency response for extreme weather and the ensuing rainfall in the areas south of the Huaihe River and the western region of Huaibei, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief authorities.
The residual circulation of Typhoon Taili, together with the warm and humid air flow at the edge of the subtropical anticyclone, led to the scattered severe convective rain weather in some parts of southern Jiangsu on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the data released by the Nanjing Meteorological Station, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, short-term heavy rainfall occurred in the central part of the main urban area of Nanjing, with a maximum hourly rainfall of 112.1 mm recorded in Shuangzha Street, Jianye District.
Changzhou and Zhenjiang also experienced heavy rainfall around noon on Wednesday, with some stations recording rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters.
The fire, urban management, power, and public security departments responded promptly and made every effort to resist the adverse effects of heavy rainfall. The Nanjing fire rescue team has set up 15 policing duty sites in key areas of the city, and has received a total of 14 urban waterlogging warning sites.
“The rain was too strong and we were flooded before we could move on. I was particularly moved to see many staff members busy fighting the rain, and I felt very relieved”, a resident of Nanjing, said.
According to the weather forecast, in the next two days, the province will experience more cloudy showers or thunderstorms with local rainfall or heavy rainstorm to be reported in some areas. Relevant departments remind citizens to avoid waterlogged roads when traveling, and cooperate with the traffic management department to ensure travel safety.
