East China’s Jiangsu province has steadily improved its regional innovation capabilities by ranking the leading innovation regions alongside with Guangdong, Beijing, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, according to China Regional Innovation Capability Evaluation Report 2023 released recently.
The Evaluation Report on China's Regional Innovation Capability was supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and has been published continuously for 23 years.
In this year's report, Jiangsu performed well in five indicators that include "knowledge creation", "knowledge acquisition", "enterprise innovation", "innovation performance", and "innovation environment".
The Enterprise Innovation indicator performed the best and ranked second nationwide. The Knowledge Acquisition indicator edged up one slot by making significant progress, rising by one place. Jiangsu ranks first in the country in terms of research and development intensity of industrial enterprises above designated size, the proportion of research and development personnel among employees of industrial enterprises above designated size, the number of graduates of technology enterprise incubators in the same year, and the number of domestic papers, among other scientific and technological indicators.
According to the report, Jiangsu has highlighted its core position in innovation, strengthened the integration of innovation chain, industry chain, and capital chain, and made significant progress in the construction of iconic innovation platforms, as is evidenced by the approval of Suzhou Laboratory for construction, and the inclusion of Zijinshan Laboratory in the national strategic science and technology force system.
In addition, the Taihu Lake Laboratory and Zhongshan Laboratory were put into operation, the National Integrated Circuit Design Automation Technology Innovation Center was approved for construction, and the construction of the National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone in southern Jiangsu achieved remarkable results. All prefecture-level cities were awarded the honorary title of National Innovative City. Jiangsu has also won 190 national science and technology awards for general projects, ranking first among all provinces and autonomous regions.
