The People's Bank of China decides to stop the circulation of the 4th series of Renminbi (RMB) from May 1st, 2018. The news instantly caught the attention of many people born in the 1950s  1990s and brought them back to the days of using the 4th series of RMB. However, those who were born in the 2000s and 2010s might not be familiar with the 4th series of RMB.

The 4th series of RMB was introduced on April 27th, 1987 and will be stopped circulating on May 1st, this year.

In fact, the issuance of the 4th series has already been ceased on April 1st, 1997, which is why the 4th series faded out of our sight gradually. However, the news days ago means that it will stop circulation officially. The 4th series of RMB will be permanently sealed in the showcases to observe the history.

Each banknote of the 4th series has different sceneries on the back. Take a look!

1 yuan note : the world-famous Great Wall of China

As the worldly-renowned cultural heritage and the first military project in ancient China, I believe that most people can recognize it at the same time as me. But can you identify the place below?

2 yuan note : Nantian Yizhu (Pillar under the Southern Sky) in the South China Sea

Legend has it that the stone is a total of anger from the fight between two gods in the ancient time. It is still a wonder of time, sitting in the South China Sea.

5 yuan notes: Wuxia Gorge of the Yangtze River

Wuxia gorge starts from the Daning River in the east of Wushan County and ends at Badong County. It is the second gorge of the famous three gorges of the Yangtze River.

By the way, this is not the first time that the three gorges have been printed on the banknotes. On the back of the 10 yuan note of the currently-used 5th series is the Qutang gorge of the Three Gorges

10 yuan note : Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the largest and highest mountain on Earth. Mount Everest is in the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the World. It is about 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) high.

Its peak is on the border of Nepal and China. It is above the Death Zone where the air is too thin for a human being to live, so usually extra oxygen is used when climbing.

50 yuan notes: The Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River

If you go to see the Hukou waterfall of the Yellow River yourself, you will certainly feel the earthshaking momentum of the Yellow River. The 400-meter-wide Yellow River flows through Hukou and suddenly shrinks to a waterfall group and forms China's second largest waterfall.

100 yuan notes: Wuzhifeng Peak at Jinggangshan Mountain

If you are familiar with modern history, you must know that printed on the back of 100 yuan note is the main peak of Jinggangshan Mountain.

As the name suggests, the Wuzhifeng (five fingers) peak looks like the five fingers of a person. It is located 6 kilometers away from Ciping Town of Jiangxi Province and is 1, 438 meters above the sea level. Wuzhifeng Mountain is now a nature reserve due to its high forest density and vast virgin forests.
