East China’s Jiangsu province has issued a document on the enhanced protection and scientific use of the ecology over the Hongze Lake, the fourth largest freshwater lake in China.
By 2021, the free water surface of the Hongze Lake area will be restored to more than 50 square kilometers, according to the document.
The water quality will measure up to the national standards of no less than class V type so as to meet the requirements for the country’s south-to-north water diversion project.
An increasingly large proportion of the water sections will measure up to the class III type of the national standards.
100,000 square meters of wetland areas will be restored and the green industry development mode will come into being.
By 2025, virtually all the lake areas will be reclaimed and the water ecology in the lake area will be restored effectively.
With the infrastructure network basically gaining ground, the high-end green industry will take its initial shape.
Governments at all levels are required to enhance guidance and ecological regulation, according to the document.
Huai’an and Suqian should bring into full play their roles of being the primary responsibility entities for the protection of the Hongze Lake by incorporating the regulation and development into the regions’ national economic and social development plans.
