East China’s Jiangsu province had invested 11.13 billion yuan as of the end of October in the construction of key water conservancy projects, a year-on-year increase of 5.2%.
The Benniu Water Conservancy Project, a control pivot project of the extension and dredging project of the Xinmeng River, has entered the final stage.
The construction of the water conservancy project started in May 2018. Upon its operation, the water conservancy hub will improve the water environment of the Taihu Lake and the West Lake region, raise the flood control and drainage standards of the basin and region, and continue to maintain the shipping capacity of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and the Xinmeng River.
The extension and dredging project of the 100-kilometer Xinmeng River is one of the major water-saving water supply projects approved by the State Council. It is also the largest single water conservancy project in Jiangsu since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
With the completion of the project construction, water transfer from the Taihu Lake basin has become a reality, realizing the smooth drainage of the Taihu Lake and the Yangtze River. At the same time, the water exchange cycle of the Taihu Lake will be shortened from 309 days to 180 days.

In order to better respond to the future flood, all parts of the province are speeding up the implementation of post-flood emergency treatment projects.
The Gaochun District of Nanjing has completed the embankment reinforcement project from the Xiaocai River to Wuxi River on the left bank of the main stream of the Shuiyang River. The 8.87-kilometer reinforced embankment with a total investment of nearly 240 million yuan will further enhance the flood control capacity of the river section.
Since the beginning of this year, the water conservancy departments at all levels in Jiangsu have established a major project coordination mechanism, strengthened inter-departmental coordination, allocated construction funds to ensure the rapid progress of project construction, and formed strong support for the establishment of a modern water safety guarantee system. This year, Jiangsu invested 13.2 billion yuan in key water conservancy projects, 84.3% of which was invested in the January-October period, maintaining a strong development momentum.
