The first 120 TEU pure electric inland container ship in China left the container terminal of Taicang Port on the Yangtze River on Sunday and was put into operation in the 80km section from Taicang Port to the port of Suzhou Industrial Park on the Beijing Hangzhou Canal, marking the arrival of the "pure electric era" of inland river transport in Jiangsu.
With a speed of 17km/h and an endurance of 220km, SS Jiangyuan Baihe is 79.92m long and 12.66m wide, making it currently the largest pure electric inland container ship in China.
The ship relies on the container battery as the power source, and is designed to be a "plug and pull" power change mode. It only takes 20 minutes for a single power change to ensure "zero emission and zero pollution" throughout the voyage.
It is estimated that compared with traditional power ships, this ship can replace about 160 tons of fuel consumption and reduce about 500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
It is estimated that by 2025, more than 17 pure electric inland container ships will be invested in our province, forming six "zero carbon" container routes, covering the whole basin of southern and northern Jiangsu sections of the Beijing Hangzhou Canal.
"Jiangsu's waterway transportation accounts for more than 60% of the province’s turnover of highway, railway, water and air transportation in the province, thereby of great significance for Jiangsu to develop green transportation and adjust the transportation structure," said Song Guosen, Director of Transportation Management Bureau of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transportation.
