Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that in 2017 China's total retail sales of social consumer goods reached 36.6 trillion yuan, an increase of 10.2% year on year. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday that China's consumer market last year grew steadily and rapidly and achieved double-digit growth for the 14th consecutive year.
The consumer market in 2017 was featured by a continuous rebound in the operating performance of retail enterprises and a continued increase in the share of online retail sales.
The rural areas and the central and western regions witnessed a rapid growth while their sales of green, smart and medium-high-end products increased significantly.
Demand for high-quality and personalized products continued to increase.
A steady fluctuation of consumer prices was reported in 2017.
Data show that the prices of agricultural products in 36 cities monitored by the Ministry of Commerce dropped by 3.3% from the same period of last year, the first decline since 2013.
The prices of pork, vegetables and eggs dropped more obviously by 11.2%, 10.5% and 9% respectively, according to the data.
The Ministry of Commerce said the consumer market in 2018 is expected to maintain a steady and rapid development trend and continue to play a fundamental role in economic growth. The people's individualized and diversified needs for will also be better met.
