The provincial department of environmental protection held a news briefing Wednesday on the progress of the 2nd national survey of pollution sources which is going on in Jiangsu.

As of the end of March, 13 prefectural cities had established 112 survey teams and established a database for approximately 350,000 suspected pollution sources.

Based on the data, the investigators will conduct household surveys one by one to ensure that all suspected sources of pollution should be investigated and traced to the origin.

According to Implementation Plan for Second Pollution Source Survey recently published by the General Office of the Provincial Government, the scope of the census of the source of pollution census includes not only industrial, agricultural, and domestic sources of pollution, but also centralized pollution control facilities such as domestic garbage treatment plants, motor vehicles, and aircrafts. Ships and other mobile sources, as well as other facilities that generate and discharge pollutants, are also included.

The survey will be carried out throughout 2018 and completed and published in 2019. Through major screening of all types of pollution sources across the province, Jiangsu will establish a comprehensive database of key pollution source files so as to provide a basis for the province to optimize its industrial structure and formulate economic plans and environmental protection policies.

Seven years after the results of the first national pollution census, the central government launched a second survey last year to investigate the scale, structure and distribution of pollution sources.

The survey will cover industrial, agricultural and residential pollution.

China aims to finish the survey in 2018, releasing the results in 2019.

China published the results of the first national pollution census in 2010, which targeted nearly 6 million objects of industrial sources, agricultural sources, residential sources and centralized pollution control facilities, collecting 1.1 billion items of basic data on pollution sources.

The survey found agricultural pollution was having a major effect on China's water supplies, prompting government efforts to clean up rural areas.
