A residential community in Nanjing’s Luhe District has put into use smart dustbins that allow people to receive cash incentives for sorting out waste.
The intelligent sorting and recycling machine composed of seven containers for metal, plastics, textile, paper, glass, hazardous waste, cans and plastic bottles.
People need to scan the QR code to register on popular social networking app WeChat. Working with the touchscreen, a user can choose the waste category, put inside the garbage accordingly, and get the weight automatically. Except glass and hazardous waste, people will receive payment for other kinds of garbage, with price clearly marked and updated daily according to the market. Payment for the recycling will be transferred to the resident’s app account and later can be transferred to their bank accounts once it’s over ten yuan.
According to the environmental protection department of Luhe District, this new waste sorting equipment will be rolled outall over the district to guide more citizens to develop the habit of garbage sorting.
