【人物简介】
查尔斯·科温
查尔斯·罗德里克·科温（Charles Roderick Curwen），1945年10月7日出生于英国坎伯兰。1967年，查尔斯·科温接受任命前往澳大利亚墨尔本担任维多利亚州总督副官；自1984年起，他开始担任秘书长及总督办公室主任一职。任职期间，查尔斯·科温积极推动江苏省同维多利亚州之间的友好交流与合作，推动东南大学-蒙纳士大学苏州联合研究生院的成立。2008年10月，查尔斯·科温获得江苏省荣誉公民称号。2009年2月他被授予东南大学顾问教授。

查尔斯·科温是澳大利亚维多利亚州总督府前秘书长。在过去的三十多年里，他一直致力于推动江苏和维多利亚州之间的友好交流，对江苏也满怀深厚的情谊。
Charles Curwen is the former official secretary of the Office of Governor of Victoria, Australia. In the past several decades, he has been continuously promoting friendly exchanges between Jiangsu and Victoria, which has led to Charles Curwen's long-term friendship with Jiangsu.
“我第一次访问中国是跟随维多利亚州总督一起来的，他是澳大利亚人。那是他首次对澳大利亚以外的地区进行访问。那一次我们来到了苏州。”查尔斯·科温回忆道。
“My first visit to china was with the governor who of Victoria, an Australian governor. And it was the first time that a governor had ever traveled outside of Australia on official business. And that took us to Suzhou.”
1986年，查尔斯·科温先生跟随时任维州总督首次来到江苏，参加苏州建城2500周年纪念活动。那一次，他得到了一件直到现在都还在使用的礼物。
In 1986, Charles Curwen followed the former Governor of Victoria to Jiangsu for the first time, attending the 2500th anniversary of the founding of Suzhou. There, he was given a gift that he has been using until now.
“当时活动主办方给参加活动的嘉宾赠送了一把小刀。我想这其实是一把古剑的小型复制品，原型应该还在苏州保存着。自从那以后，我每天都使用它拆信。”
“All of the guests at the celebration in the 2500th anniversary was given a letter opener, which is a miniature of the a large one, which obviously sit somewhere in Suzhou. So I've used it ever since every day. I use it for open my mail.”
这把吴王夫差剑的模型，查尔斯·科温一直带在身边，这把小剑也开启了他和江苏30多年不解的缘分。此次来江苏，他特意造访了位于苏州的东南大学-蒙纳士大学联合研究生院。十多年前，正是在查尔斯·科温的推动下，这所学院才得以建立。
Since then, Charles Curwen has taken the sword model with him and has started his friendship with Jiangsu for over 3 decades. This time, Charles Curwen made a special visit to the Joint Graduate School of Southeast University-Monash University, which he had promoted about a decade ago.
查尔斯·科温回忆到：“当时经人介绍，我来到东南大学并拜访了浦跃朴教授，商讨我们能做些什么。起初，东南大学和蒙纳士大学当时都派遣了教授到对方学院交流访问。最后得益于很多人的帮助和支持，在苏州联合办学的想法浮现了出来。”
“So I went down to Nanjing, met professor Pu Yuepu. So to cut a long story short, we had an exchange of professors from Southeast University with Monash and vice versa. And then we got down to business about discussing what we might do. And then with assistance of others, the idea was brought to the forefront that we might actually have a joint university based in Suzhou.
“从蒙纳士大学的角度来看，这所联合研究生院是很成功的。学生毕业之后，就能拿到东南大学和蒙纳士大学两个学校的证书。”查尔斯·科温说到。
“But it certainly been very successful from Monash his point of view. And when you graduate from that university, you get a certificate from Monash University and from Southeast University.” said Charles Curwen.
现在，联合研究院已经有400名在读学生，它也成为了江苏同维多利亚州友好交流的见证。
Now, the Joint Graduate School has about 400 students. It is also a meaningful fruit borne by the sister relation between Jiangsu and Victoria.
自1979年缔结为友好省州以来，江苏和维州之间在经济、科教、卫生、文化等多个领域都开展了深入合作，成果卓著。查尔斯·科温说，明年是江苏和维州建立友好省州关系40周年，他也很荣幸亲眼见证了中国改革开放40年的发展历程。
Since Jiangsu and Victoria forged sister relation in 1979, the cooperation between the two sides in various fields such as economy, science and education, health, culture and so on has been fruitful. Charles Curwen said that next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the sister relationship, and that he was honored to witness the 40 years of China's reform and opening-up.
“江苏省和维多利亚州之间的关系一直以来都十分融洽。明年将会迎来两地友好关系40周年的纪念。这些年来，两地之间的合作非常紧密，我也希望我们双方在更多领域展开合作。”
“We do have a very warm relationship between Jiangsu and Victoria, which is now coming up for forty years next year. The advances have been extraordinary and I hope that we will continue to be involved with each other on a grand scale.”
正是由于和中国和江苏的友好情谊，查尔斯·科温与维州当地的华人也联系密切，他也是澳大利亚华人组织1818俱乐部的荣誉主席。
Due to his close relation to Jiangsu, to China, Charles Curwen is closely associated with local Chinese in Victoria. Now, he is the honorary president of the Lion 1818 Club of Chinese Australians.
“1818俱乐部就是为了那些定居在维州的中国移民，或者有家人定居于此的中国人创办的。我们这个俱乐部给这些人提供力所能及的支持，比如帮助他们安顿生活、子女教育、住房安排、以及福利保障等等。”
“The 1818 club exists for Chinese who have either come to settle in Victoria, Australia, or whose family are living here. And essentially what we do is to support in any way that we can in terms of their settling in, education of their children, the housing arrangements, and their general well-being.”
从第一次来到江苏到现在这30多年间，查尔斯·科温多次来访江苏，见证并参与了江苏的发展。这位出生在英国，定居在澳大利亚，荣获江苏省荣誉公民称号的绅士，也早已经把江苏视为他在中国的精神家园。
Since his first visit to Jiangsu, Charles Curwen has visited Jiangsu for many times. He also witnessed and participated in the development of Jiangsu in the last over 3 decades. Growing up in Britain, settling in Australia and becoming the honorary citizen of Jiangsu province, this gentleman has long regarded Jiangsu as his spiritual home in China.
