Jiangsu’s power consumption, a gauge of economic activity, reached 600.3 million kWh last year, making it the second province after Guangdong whose electricity consumption exceeded the 600-billion-kWh mark.
The annual electricity consumption of 600 billion kWh is equivalent to the total annual power generation of the Three Gorges Power Plant, which allows a high-speed rail to travel to and from the Earth and the Sun 70 times.
As one of the fastest growing provinces, Jiangsu has witnessed increasing power consumption in recent years. On August 9, 2018, the dispatching power load of Jiangsu Power Grid climbed to 1,026,900 kilowatts, setting a new record in the highest power load and the total annual electricity consumption, a strong indication of the province’s sustained economic growth against the downturns.
In order to meet the growing demand for electricity, Jiangsu is vigorously promoting the development of clean energies. By the end of November 2018, the province's generating units had generated 457.1 billion kWh of electricity, of which 51.8 million kWh of clean energy was generated, accounting for more than 10% of the first time, reaching 11.3%, up 3 percentage points from the full year of 2017.
