Engineering expert Qian Qihu, won China's top science award on Tuesday at the National Science and Technology Award Conference held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This is the second consecutive year for Jiangsu to bear a national science and technology award winner.
Chinese President Xi Jinping presented award certificates to them at the ceremony to honor distinguished scientists and their research achievements.
A total of 278 projects and seven scientific experts won awards during this year's ceremony, and the bonus of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award has been lifted from five million yuan (730,000 U.S. dollars) per person to eight million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars).
CAE academician Qian Qihu was honored for his outstanding contributions to China's underground protective infrastructure.
Born in October 1937 in Kunshan City in eastern Jiangsu Province, Qian has spent over 60 years studying protection engineering, helping China to build an indestructible "Steel Great Wall" underground.
It is a strategy considered by many to be as important as China's research and development of weapons.
Qian also planned underground spaces for more than 20 key fortified cities, providing reliable foundations for China's future cities.
Jiangsu has 50 general projects awarded this year at the 2018 National Science and Technology Award Conference, of which 22 were completed under the auspices of the Jiangsu Province. The total number of winners continued to be the first among all the provinces in the country. Of the 50 general projects, 5 were for natural sciences, 8 were for technological inventions and 37 were for scientific and technological progress.
The project "Key Technology and Application of Distributed Optical Fiber Monitoring in Geological Engineering" which was completed under the auspices of Nanjing University has made a new breakthrough in the mechanism and theoretical criterion of geological engineering disasters. More than 40 kinds of products have been put on the market, and have been used in more than 300 important projects at home and abroad. The project won the first prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, which is an important achievement in the field of geology and geotechnical engineering monitoring.
The project "Key Technology and Engineering Application of National Basic Standard Device of Power Frequency and High Voltage", completed by Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. of State Grid, has established 1Kv~ 100Kv Full Series Standard Device for High Voltage Foundation. The achievement has been authorized as the public standard of measurement in China, realizing the complete replacement of foreign products. The project won second prize this year.
