Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Provincial Party Committee, called for the province to promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region as a national strategy by implementing the spirit of the Central Economic Work Conference and the deployment of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 13th Provincial Party Committee. He made the remarks when going on an inspection tour to Wujiang district of Suzhou city last Friday.

Lou visited the Fenhu New and Hi-tech Zone in his first leg of the inspection tour.

The Fenhu High-tech Zone, located in the golden hinterland where Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai meet, has become the investment hotbed for more than 3,000 enterprises that are engaged in high-end equipment manufacturing, new semiconductor industry, and international service outsourcing.

Lou Qinjian inspected the pollution prevention, water intake distribution and coastal ecological protection along the Taipu River that sits on the border of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai.

He stressed that an important part of the development of regional integration in the Yangtze River Delta is to jointly promote environmental protection, making it important to attach great importance to environmental protection in the Taipu River Basin, actively explore long-term mechanisms, and work together to promote regional ecological civilization.

When inspecting the high-tech zone administration building, the CPC provincial chief learned in detail about the major infrastructure planning such as railways, the development planning of high-tech zones, and the construction of major projects. He stressed that it is necessary to firmly grasp the major opportunities brought about by the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region as a national strategy, give full play to geographical location advantages and industrial base advantages, enhance development stances and make systematic planning so as to seek greater development in the integration into the national strategy.

Hengtong Group is the largest system integrator and network service provider in China's fiber optic network and power grid systems. Lou Qinjian learned in detail about the company's intelligent manufacturing, technical level, R&D layout and giving the thumbs up to the company’s practice of consistently grasping scientific and technological innovation and gaining the upper hand of the industry development.

When visiting Tongli, a famous historical and cultural town, Lou inquired about the cultural relics protection, historical excavation, development planning and tourism development of the ancient town.

He demanded that local authorities should do a good job in cultural relics protection and human resources mining, establish a scientific concept of protection and development of ancient towns, promote the protection and utilization of cultural relics, strengthen utilization in protection, promote protection in use, and pay attention to the modernized interpretation of the cultural value of the ancient town and maximize the comprehensive benefits of historical and cultural resources in the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

He hoped that the people in Suzhou will build up their confidence and seize the opportunities to promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region and make greater contribution to the province’s high quality development so as to greet the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China with greater performances.

A three-year action plan was approved last June by officials of Shanghai and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces who gathered on Friday in Shanghai to map out the blueprint for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region.

The plan aims to build the region into a world-class city cluster by 2020.

During his keynote speech at the first China International Import Expo last November, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that the country will support integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, and make it a national strategy.

The Yangtze River Delta, which centers on Shanghai, is an important international gateway and one of the major engines of China’s economy. Currently, the Yangtze River Delta is China’s richest region per capita, and in 2016 generated a GDP of RMB 17.72 trillion or US$2.76 trillion – about 20 percent of national GDP. It is responsible for one-third of China’s imports and exports, and has a population of about 150 million people – 11 percent of the country’s total.
