Highways and railways in Jiangsu province saw the first wave of travel peaks on Wednesday as the spring festival holiday is drawing nearer.

2.03 million vehicles traveled across the province on Wednesday, giving rise to the first peak of the passenger flow since the start of the spring festival travel rush or chunyun.

2.4 million vehicles are expected to hit the highways on a daily basis during the spring festival holiday, up 8% from a year ago. The peak of the passenger flow will come on the sixth day of the first lunar month.

The toll-free policy will be in force during the spring festival holiday as passenger vehicles with seven seats or fewer will be exempt from highway tolls from February 4th to February 10th.

Beginning on January 25th, trucks carrying hazardous materials are prohibited from entering the express highways from 10 pm to six am.

2.06 million passengers were sent off by railway stations in the Yangtze River Delta on Wednesday. 267 trains were added to the fleet to head for the destinations in the Yangtze River Delta, South China, Central China, West China and North China.

Major destinations in the Yangtze River Delta include Shanghai, Xuzhou, Hefei, Hangzhou, Huaibei, Wuhu and Nantong.

The Chinese Spring Festival, also known as Chunyun in Chinese, starts 15 days before the Chinese New Year and ends 25 days after it. The 40-day festival witnesses the largest annual migration on Earth, as millions of people travel either home to be with their family and friends to celebrate the Chinese New Year — which falls on Feb. 5 in 2019 — or play tourist during the one-week-long Spring Festival holidays. More than 2.99 billion trips are expected to be made this year.
